South African ID document

South African citizens and permanent residents, 16 years and older, must be in possession of an identity document. First time applicants must submit applications to their nearest Department of Home Affairs office or South African Missions (Embassies/Consulates abroad).

Checklist of Documents to be Submitted:

Application has to be filed IN PERSON with the followings BY APPOINTMENT:

Please collect all forms BY APPOINTMENT.
  • Completed forms DHA-9 & DHA-529 in BLACK pen and in BLOCK letters.

    DHA-9 & DHA-10 form is not downloadable. It can be obtained from the South African Consulate General.

  • Two (2) recent coloured photos in white background (showing head and shoulders measuring 35mm x 45mm with mouth closed).
  • South African valid passport(s)
    (original and copy).
  • South African ID, if available (original and/or copy).
  • South African PR permit and naturalisation certificate, if applicable (original and/or copy),
  • Written confirmation to indicate choice of surname under which
    female applicant wishes to be recorded in the National Population Register following the registration of a marriage

  • Non-refundable application fee of HKD91.00 in CASH.

  • No fee required for first ID application.

Processing Time:

Civic application takes 6-9 months (-/+) for processing by Department of Home Affairs in South Africa
