Our clients include not only members of the public requiring Consular services, but also other government departments and institutions, South African representatives abroad and all business units within the DIRCO. South African Consulate-General in HKSAR/MSAR can assist South Africans in the event of an emergency to:


  • Issue emergency travel certificate or travel documents;
  • Contact your relatives and friends for assistance (financial and flight tickets);
  • Advise on how to transfer funds;
  • Assist to obtain medical help;
  • Assist in the event of a death;
  • Assist and arrange evacuation of South African citizens from war zones and areas affected by natural disasters;
  • Assist victims of robbery and other violence(non-financial);
  • Assist in the location of missing persons;
  • Help in the location of abducted children and attempt to reunite them with custodial parents;
  • Arrange for next of kin to be informed of an accident or death and advise on procedures;
  • Contact and visit SA citizens arrested or detained and, in certain circumstances, arrange for messages to be sent to relatives or friends;


South African missions abroad, and Consular staff in particular, cannot:


  • Intervene in court proceedings;
  • Get you out of prison;
  • Give legal advice or instigate court proceedings on your behalf;
  • Get better treatment for you in hospital or prison than is provided for local nationals;
  • Investigate a crime;
  • Pay your hotel, legal, medical or any other bills;
  • Pay for your travelling expenses;
  • Undertake work done by travel representatives, airlines, banks or motoring Organisations;
  • Obtain accommodation, work or a work permit on your behalf;
  • Formally assist dual nationals in the country of their second nationality;
  • Pay for the transport/conveyance or cremation of the mortal remains of SA citizens.


VISA

VISA AND PERMIT APPLICATIONS


Please take note that in terms of Immigration Regulation 9(2) of 2014 any applicant applying for any visa (permit) must submit his or her application in person at any foreign mission of the Republic where the applicant is ordinarily resident or holds citizenship or to the Mission to which the country is accredited to.

All applications for visas and permits must be submitted in person by the applicant during Consular hours Monday – Friday 08:30 – 12:30.


RETIRED VISA


  • Application to be submitted in person by the applicant
  • Original passport valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of intended visit with at least 2 unused visa pages. Only machine readable travel documents (MRTD) is accepted and MRTDS which has been manually extended will not be accepted for travelling to and from South Africa.
  • Photocopy of valid residential permit (if applicable)
  • Application fee HK$275 (cash payment only)
  • 1 recent passport size photograph ( 1.5 X 2 inches with white background)
  • Application form DHA-1738 (duly completed)
  • Vaccination certificate (if traveling through yellow fever belt)
  • Police clearance certificates in respect of all applicants 18 years and older from each country where person stayed longer than 12 months
  • Medical and Radiological reports in respect of each applicant (provided a Radiological report shall not be required in respect of children under the age of 12 years or pregnant women)
  • Marriage certificate where applicable
  • Proof of a spousal relationship by means of Departmental Affidavit (if not married)
  • Divorce decree or proof of legal separation where applicable
  • Death certificate in respect of a late spouse where applicable


Additional documentation to be submitted:

  • Proof to be submitted that applicant has the right to a pension or an irrevocable annuity or retirement account to the amount of R37 000 per month which will give such an applicant payment for the rest of his/her life from the country of his/her origin; or
  • The minimum net worth which shall be a combination of assets realizing R37 000 per month.


CRITICAL SKILLS VISA


  • Application to be submitted in person by applicant
  • Original passport valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of intended visit and have at 2 unused pages available Only machine readable travel documents (MRTD) is accepted and MRTDS which has been manually extended will not be accepted for travelling to and from South Africa.
  • Photocopy of valid residential permit (if applicable)
  • Application fee HK$ 985 (cash payment only)
  • 1 recent passport size photograph ( 1.5 X 2 inches with white background)
  • Application form DHA-1738
  • Vaccination certificate (if traveling through yellow fever belt)
  • Applicants traveling by air must be in possession of a return ticket or onward ticket or submit a written undertaking by the prospective employer accepting full responsibility for the costs related to the deportation of the applicant and his family should it becomes necessary
  • Police clearance certificates in respect of all applicants 18 years and older from each country where the applicant resided for longer than 12months (not older than 6 months from date of issue)
  • Medical and Radiological reports in respect of each applicant (provided a Radiological report shall not be required in respect of children under the age of 12 years or pregnant women) (not older than 6 months from date of issue)
  • Birth certificate (to be unabridged where relevant to prove parenthood)
  • Proof of custody or adoption where applicable
  • Consent from parents where applicable
  • Marriage certificate where applicable
  • Proof of a spousal relationship by means of affidavit
  • Divorce decree or proof of legal separation where applicable
  • Death certificate in respect of a late spouse where applicable


Additional documentation to be submitted:

  • Proof that applicant falls within the critical skills category in the form of:


    • A confirmation, in writing, from the professional body, council or board recognized by SAQA in terms of section 13(1)(i) of the National Qualifications Framework Act, or any relevant government Department confirming the skills or qualifications of the applicant and appropriate post qualification experience;
    • If required by law, proof of application for a certificate of registration with the professional body, council or board recognised by SAQA in terms of section 13(1)(i) of the National Qualifications Framework Act; and
    • Proof of evaluation of the foreign qualification by SAQA and translated by a sworn translator into one of the official languages of the Republic
  • A written undertaking by the employer accepting responsibility for the costs related to the deportation of the applicant and his/her dependent family members, should it become necessary


EXCHANGE VISA


REQUIREMENTS FOR EXCHANGE VISA ITO SEC. 22 (b) OF IMMIGRATION ACT

An exchange visa may be issued to a foreigner, who is under twenty-five (25) years of age and has received an offer to conduct work for no longer than one (1) year: provided that the prospective employer certifies that the position exists and makes the prescribed commitments. The following information is required:


  • Application to be submitted in person by the applicant
  • A duly completed and personally signed visa application form (DHA-1738)
  • 1 recent passport size photograph ( 1.5 X 2 inch with white background)
  • Original passport valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of the intended visit and containing at least two blank pages for endorsements. Only machine readable travel documents (MRTD) is accepted and MRTDS which has been manually extended will not be accepted for travelling to and from South Africa.
  • Application fee HK$ 275 (cash payment only)
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate, if the person travelled or intends traveling from or through a yellow fever endemic area: Provided that the certificate shall not be required where that person travelled or intends traveling in direct transit through such area or where an application is made in the Republic
  • Proof of medical cover or insurance recognized in the RSA
  • Proof of financial means to sustain person in the RSA
  • Valid return ticket not exceeding 12 months
  • Birth certificate to proof applicant is under the age of 25 years
  • Police clearance certificate for all applicants 18 years and older
  • Medical and Radiological reports
  • Marriage certificate or proof of partnership (if applicable)
  • A valid work contract from the prospective employer confirming the employment will not be for a period longer than one year (12months)
  • a signed and dated letter on letterhead of the prospective employer certifying that the position exists (details of when the position was created, the incumbent in the position and how the employer plans to fill the position after the applicant should be provided), and committing himself or herself in writing to:
    • pay the applicant remuneration which complies with applicable legal requirements – details (amount) of the remuneration must be confirmed on the letter; the employer may be requested to provide written approval from the Department of Labour, if the remuneration is deemed not to comply with applicable legal requirements;
    • provide for the welfare and the needs of the applicant while in the Republic of South Africa under the exchange visa – in addition, the applicant may be requested to submit the employment contract / offer; and report to the Department of Home Affairs the failure of the applicant to comply with the terms of his or her visa, or to depart when so required;
  • In the case of a person under the age of 21 years: particulars of the person in the Republic who will act as the learner’s guardian and a confirmatory letter from the intended guardian; and
  • Proof of consent for the intended stay from both parents or from the custodian parent, along with proof of sole custody in the latter case
  • Proof of valid residential permit if applicable
  • Any additional documents/information as required by the Mission e.g. proof of accommodation etc.


(Please take note that you may not conduct work other than work for which the permit is issued and will be valid for one (1) year only


GENERAL WORK VISA


  • Application to be submitted in person by the applicant

  • A written undertaking by the employer accepting responsibility for the costs related to the deportation of the applicant and his/her dependent family members, should it become necessary;
  • A certificate from the Department of Labour confirming that:
    • Despite a diligent search, the prospective employer has been unable to find a suitable citizen or permanent resident with qualifications or skills and experience equivalent to those of the applicant;
    • The applicant has qualifications or proven skills and experience in line with the job offer;
    • The salary benefits of the applicant are not inferior to the average salary and benefits of citizens or permanent residents occupying similar positions in the Republic; and
    • The contract of employment stipulating the conditions of employment and signed by both the employer and the applicant is in line with the labour standards in the Republic and is made conditional upon the general work visa being approved;
  • Proof of Qualifications evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority and translated by a sworn translator into one of the official languages of the Republic
  • Full particulars of the employer, including where applicable, proof of registration of the business with the Commission on Intellectual Property and Companies (CIPC);
  • An undertaking by the employer to inform the Director-General should the applicant not comply with the provisions of the Act or conditions of the visa; and
  • And undertaking by the employer to inform the Director-General upon the employee no longer being in the employ of such employer or when he/she is employed in a different capacity or role.



GENERAL WORK PERMIT – Health Profession


  • Application to be submitted in person by the applicant
  • Passport valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of intended visit and should contain at least two unused pages. Only machine readable travel documents (MRTD) is accepted and MRTDS which has been manually extended will not be accepted for travelling to and from South Africa.
  • Photocopy of valid residential permit (if applicable)

  • Application form DHA-1738 (duly completed)
  • Vaccination certificate (if traveling through yellow fever belt)

  • A contract of Employment stipulating the conditions of employment and signed by both the employer and the applicant
  • Proof of Qualifications (translated into one of the official languages of South Africa)
  • Proof of experience and skills in line with the job offer
  • A letter from the employer motivating why a citizen or permanent resident could not fill the position, as well as proof of efforts made to obtain the services of a citizen or resident, together with the particulars of the unsuccessful candidates
  • An undertaking by the Employer to inform the Director-General should the applicant not comply with the Act or leave the Employer
  • If required by law, proof of registration with the relevant professional body, council or board
  • Full particulars of the Employer, including, if applicable, proof of registration of the business with the Registrar of Companies


INTRA-COMPANY TRANSFER VISA


  • Application to be submitted in person by the applicant
  • Original passport valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of intended visit with at least 3 unused pages for endorsements Only machine readable travel documents (MRTD) is accepted and MRTDS which has been manually extended will not be accepted for travelling to and from South Africa.
  • Photocopy of valid residential permit (if applicable)
  • Application fee HKD 985.00 (cash payment only)
  • 1 recent passport size photograph ( 1.5 X 2 inch with white background)
  • Application form DHA-1738 (duly completed)
  • Vaccination certificate (if traveling through yellow fever belt)
  • Applicants traveling by air must be in possession of a return ticket or submit a written undertaking by the prospective employer accepting full responsibility for the costs related to the deportation of the applicant and his family should it becomes necessary
  • Police clearance certificates in respect of all applicants 18 years and older from each country where person resided for period longer than 12 months
  • Medical and Radiological reports in respect of each applicant (provided a Radiological report shall not be required in respect of children under the age of 12 years or pregnant women)
  • Birth certificate (to be unabridged where relevant to prove parenthood)
  • Proof of custody or adoption where applicable
  • Consent from parents where applicable
  • Marriage certificate where applicable
  • Proof of a spousal relationship by means of affidavit
  • Divorce decree or proof of legal separation where applicable
  • Death certificate in respect of a late spouse where applicable


Additional documentation to be submitted:

  • The applicant’s contract of employment with the company abroad valid for period of not less than 6 months;
  • A letter
    • from the company abroad confirming that the applicant shall be transferred to a branch, subsidiary or an affiliate company situated in South Africa; and
    • the South African company confirming the transfer of the applicant contemplated in subparagraph 2(a) as well as specifying the occupation and capacity in which that foreigner shall be employed and that they will take full responsibility for the applicant (and family) during their stay in South Africa and undertake to reimburse the Department of Home Affairs any costs incurred in relation to the deportation of the holder of an intra-company transfer work visa and any of his or her dependent family members.
  • The relevant employer shall furthermore confirm and ensure that –
    • A foreigner is only employed in the specific position for which the visa has been issued
    • The foreign employee will at all times comply with the provisions of the Act and conditions of his or her visa and undertakes to immediately notify the Director-General if the employee refuses to comply with the provisions of the Act or conditions of the visa; and
    • A plan is developed for the transfer of skills to a South African citizen or permanent resident.


OWN BUSINESS VISA


  • Application to be submitted in person by the applicant
  • Original passport valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of intended visit with at least 3 unused pages. Only machine readable travel documents (MRTD) is accepted and MRTDS which has been manually extended will not be accepted for travelling to and from South Africa.
  • Photocopy of valid residential permit (if applicable)
  • Application fee HKD 985.00 (cash payment only)
  • 1 recent passport size photograph ( 1.5 X 2 inch with white background)
  • Application form DHA-1738 (duly completed)
  • Vaccination certificate (if traveling through yellow fever belt)
  • Police clearance certificates in respect of all applicants 18 years and older from each country where person stayed longer than 12 months
  • Medical (BI-811) and Radiological (BI-806) reports in respect of each applicant (provided a Radiological report shall not be required in respect of children under the age of 12 years or pregnant women)
  • Marriage certificate where applicable
  • Proof of a spousal relationship by means of Departmental Affidavit (if not married)
  • Divorce decree or proof of legal separation where applicable
  • Death certificate in respect of a late spouse where applicable


(i) Additional documentation to be submitted when intending to establish a business:

  • A certificate issued by a chartered accountant registered with the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants or a professional accountant registered with the South African Institute of Professional Accountant to the effect that-
    • At least an amount in cash to be invested, by notice in the Gazette, is available or already invested; or
    • At least an amount in cash and a capital contribution, by notice in the Gazette, is available or already invested;
  • An undertaking that at least 60% of the total staff complement employed in the operations of the business are South African citizens or permanent residents employed permanently in various positions and that proof of compliance will be submitted within 12 months of issuance of visa;
  • A letter of recommendation from the Department of Trade and Industry regarding –
    • The feasibility of the business; and
    • The contribution to the national interest of the Republic.
  • An undertaking to register with the-
    • South African Revenue Service;
    • Unemployment Insurance Fund;
    • Compensation Fund for Occupational Injuries and Diseases;
    • Companies and Intellectual Properties Commission (CIPC), where legally required, and
    • Relevant professional body, board or council recognized by SAQA in terms of section 13(1) of the National Qualification Framework Act, where applicable;


14 (Provided that upon registration all relevant certificates will be submitted to the Director-General)

  • (ii) Additional documentation to be submitted when business has been established or investing in an existing business in the Republic:
  • 1. A certificate issued by a chartered accountant registered with the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants or a professional accountant registered with the South African Institute of Professional Accountant to the effect that-
  • (iii) At least an amount in cash to be invested, by notice in the Gazette, is available or already invested; or
  • (iv) At least an amount in cash and a capital contribution, by notice in the Gazette, is available or already invested;
  • 2. Proof that at least 60% of the total staff complement employed in the operations of the business are South African citizens or permanent residents employed permanently in various positions:
  • 3. Proof of registration with the-
  • (v) South African Revenue Service;
  • (vi) Unemployment Insurance Fund;
  • (vii) Compensation Fund for Occupational Injuries and Diseases;
  • (viii) Companies and Intellectual Properties Commission (CIPC), where legally required, and
  • (ix) Relevant professional body, board or council recognized by SAQA in terms of section 13(1) of the National Qualification Framework Act, where applicable;
  • 4. A letter of recommendation from the Department of Trade and Industry regarding –
    • (iii) The feasibility of the business; and
    • (iv) The contribution to the national interest of the Republic.
  • 5. In addition a foreigner who invests or has invested in an existing business shall also submit –
    • (i)Financial statements in respect of the preceding financial year; and
    • (ii) Proof of investment
  • 6. The applicant must, within 12 months of the visa being issued, submit to the Director-General a letter of confirmation from the Department of Labour that 60% of the staff complement employed in the operations of the business are South African citizens or permanent residents who are employed permanently in various positions.


RELATIVES VISA


  • Application to be submitted in person by the applicant
  • Original passport valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of intended visit with at least 3 unused pages for endorsements. Only machine readable travel documents (MRTD) is accepted and MRTDS which has been manually extended will not be accepted for travelling to and from South Africa.
  • Photocopy of valid residential permit (if applicable)
  • Application fee HK$ 275 (cash payment only)
  • 1 recent passport size photograph ( 1.5 X 2 inch with white background)
  • Application form DHA-1738 (duly completed)
  • Vaccination certificate (if traveling through yellow fever belt)
  • Police clearance certificates in respect of all applicants 18 years and older for each country where a person spent longer than one year
  • Medical and Radiological reports in respect of each applicant (provided a Radiological report shall not be required in respect of children under the age of 12 years or pregnant women)
  • Birth certificate (to be unabridged where relevant to prove parenthood/kinship)
  • Proof of custody or adoption where applicable
  • Consent from parents where applicable
  • Marriage certificate where applicable
  • Proof of a spousal relationship by means of Departmental Affidavit (including complete history of relationship and copy of Notorial contract) (if not married)
  • Divorce decree or proof of legal separation where applicable
  • Death certificate in respect of a late spouse where applicable
  • Letter of support from SA spouse and/or partner


(i) Additional documentation to be submitted when intending to establish a business:

  • A relatives permit may be issued for the prescribed period by the Director-General to a foreigner who is a member of the immediate family of a citizen or a permanent resident, provided that such citizen or permanent resident provides the prescribed financial assurance
  • The financial assurance shall be an amount of R8 500 per person per month to be proven by means of a salary advice or bank statement: Provided that the financial assurance shall not be applicable where the applicant is a spouse or dependent minor child. (not applicable to spouse of SA citizen)
  • Proof of kinship, within the second step, between the applicant and the citizen or permanent resident holder by means of an unabridged birth certificate and where necessary paternity test results.


STUDY VISA


The following information is required in order to apply for a study visa at a learning institution in South Africa:


  • Application to be submitted in person by the applicant
  • Duly completed and personally signed application form (DHA-1738)
  • 1 recent passport size photograph ( 1.5 X 2 inch with white background)
  • Original passport valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of the intended visit and containing at least 3 unused pages for endorsements. Only machine readable travel documents (MRTD) is accepted and MRTDS which has been manually extended will not be accepted for travelling to and from South Africa.
  • Application fee HKD 275.00(in cash)
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate, if the person travelled or intends traveling from or through a yellow fever endemic area: Provided that the certificate shall not be required where that person travelled or intends traveling in direct transit through such area or where an application is made in the Republic
  • Proof of medical cover renewed annually for the period of study with a medical scheme registered in terms of the Medical Schemes Act
  • An undertaking by the parents or legal guardian that the learner will have medical cover for the full duration of the period of study
  • Proof of sufficient financial means available to the learner whilst residence in the Republic (R3 000 per month to be available)
  • In case of sojourn not exceeding 12 months, submission of proof of a valid return air ticket
  • Police clearance certificate for all applicants 18 years and older from each country where person stayed for period longer that 12 months.
  • Medical and Radiological reports
  • Marriage certificate or proof of partnership (if applicable)
  • An official letter from the relevant institution* confirming provisional acceptance at the institution and the duration of the course; and
    • An undertaking by the Registrar or Principal of the learning institution to provide proof of Registration, as contemplated in the relevant legislation within 60 days of registration; or
    • In the event of failure to register by the closing date, provide the Director-General that the applicant is no longer registered with such institution; and
    • Within 30 days of completion of studies, notify the Director-General when the applicant has completed his/her studies or requires extending such period of study.
    • * A learning institution must be registered in terms of the South African Schools Act, 1996 (Act 84 of 1996), the Higher Education Act, 1997 (Act 101 of 1997) or the Further Education and Training Colleges Act, 2006 (Act 16 of 2006)
  • In case of a learner under the age of 18 years –


    • Copy of birth certificate of child
    • A copy of his or her identity document (if applicable)
    • Proof of physical address and contact number of the adult person residing in the Republic, who is acting or has accepted to act as such learner’s guardian, including a confirmatory letter from that guardian; and
    • Proof of consent for the intended stay from both parents or, where applicable, from the parent or legal guardian who has been issued with a court order granting full or specific parental responsibilities and rights or legal guardianship of the learner;
  • In the case of a foreign state accepting responsibility for the applicant in terms of a bilateral agreement, a written undertaking in respect of the departure of the applicant
  • Proof of valid residential permit if applicable
  • Any additional documents/information as required by the Mission e.g. proof of accommodation in South Africa


VISITORS VISA FOR PERIOD LONGER THAN THREE MONTHS


VISITORS VISA FOR PERIOD LONGER THAN THREE MONTHS IN RESPECT OF:


VOLUNTEER;


RESEARCH;


SABATICAL;


SPOUSE OR DEPENDANT CHILD of holder of visitors visa, study visa, treaty visa, business visa, medical visa, relatives visa, work visa, retired visa or exchange visa;


TEACHER AT INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL;


PERSON INVOLVED IN THE PRODUCTION OF A FILM OR ADVERTISEMENT IN REPUBLIC;


FOREGIN JOURNALIST SECONDED TO RSA;


VISITING PROFESSOR OR LECTURER ARTISTS WHO WISH TO WRITE, PAINT OR SCULPT;


PERSON INVOLVED IN ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY;


TOUR LEADER OR HOST OF A TOUR;


The following information is required:

  • Application to be submitted in person by the applicant;
  • A duly completed and personally signed visa application form (DHA-84);
  • 2 recent passport size photograph ( 1.5 X 2 inch with white background)
  • Passport valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of the intended visit and containing at least 3 unused pages; Only machine readable travel documents (MRTD) is accepted and MRTDS which has been manually extended will not be accepted for travelling to and from South Africa.
  • Application fee HK$ 275 (cash payment only)
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate, if the person travelled or intends traveling from or through a yellow fever endemic area: Provided that the certificate shall not be required where that person travelled or intends traveling in direct transit through such area or where an application is made in the Republic;
  • Proof of financial means to sustain person in the RSA by means of certified bank statements for the last three (3) months (minimum amount of R3000 to be available);
  • In case of sojourn not exceeding 12 months, submission of proof of a valid return air ticket;
  • Police clearance certificate in respect of person 18 years and older from each country where applicant has resided for period longer than 12 months (to be officially translated in one of the official languages of the RSA);
  • Medical and Radiological reports;
  • A letter from the organization where the service/research/sabbatical will be rendered, confirming the nature and period of the service;
  • In respect of teacher at an international school, a contract of employment signed by the employer and the applicant and a written undertaking of financial responsibility for the applicant;
  • In respect of a person involved in the production of a film or advertisement in the Republic by a foreign news agency, documentation confirming such secondment and the duration thereof;
  • In respect of foreign journalist seconded to the Republic by a foreign news agency, documentation confirming such secondment and the duration thereof;
  • In respect of a visiting professor or lecturer, an invitation from the host in the Republic;
  • In respect of artists who wish to write, paint or sculpt, documentation confirming the activity to be undertaking and the duration thereof;
  • In respect of a person involved in the entertainment industry who would be travelling through the Republic to perform, confirmation thereof by the host in the Republic;
  • In respect of a tour leader or host of a tour, a contract of employment signed by the employer and the applicant and a written undertaking of financial responsibility for the applicant;
  • A letter of confirmation that it is not a paid post (applicable to Volunteers);
  • Any additional documents/information (if applicable) as required by the Mission e.g. proof of accommodation, valid residence permit, confirmation of Civil Service from Danish Authorities, etc.


VISITORS VISA ITO SECTION 11(6)


(PARTNER/SPOUSE OF SA CITIZEN INTENDING TO WORK)

  • Application to be submitted in person by the applicant
  • Passport valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of intended visit and should contain at least two unused pages. Only machine readable travel documents (MRTD) is accepted and MRTDS which has been manually extended will not be accepted for travelling to and from South Africa.
  • Photocopy of valid residential permit (if applicable)
  • Permit free of charge to spouse/partner of SA citizen
  • 2 recent passport size photograph ( 1.5 X 2 inch with white background)
  • Application form DHA-84 (duly completed)
  • Vaccination certificate (if traveling through yellow fever belt)
  • Original Police clearance certificates in respect of all applicants 18 years and older for each country where a person spent longer than 12 months
  • Original Medical and Radiological reports in respect of each applicant (provided a Radiological report shall not be required in respect of children under the age of 12 years or pregnant women)
  • Birth certificate (to be unabridged where relevant to prove parenthood/kinship)
  • Proof of custody or adoption where applicable
  • Consent from parents where applicable
  • Marriage certificate where applicable
  • Proof of a spousal relationship by means of Departmental Affidavit (including complete history of relationship and copy of Notorial contract) (if not married)
  • Divorce decree or proof of legal separation where applicable
  • Death certificate in respect of a late spouse where applicable

Additional documentation to be submitted:

  • In addition a valid work offer and work contract must be submitted from the prospective employer in South Africa
  • Letter of support from SA spouse/partner in respective of application for visa and of employment to be taken up
  • Proof that application for Permanent Residence have been submitted or undertaking that Permanent Residence will be applied for within three months from the date upon which he/she qualifies to be issued with that permit

(This visa will be valid provided that a good spousal relationship exists and the holder thereof shall apply for permanent residence within three months from the date upon which he/she qualifies to be issued with that permit)

PROCEDURE FOR REGISTRATION OF FOREIGN BIRTHS

(these requirements are for children under the age of 15)


  • In order to register your child’s birth at the Department of Home Affairs in South Africa the following documentation are requested:
  • duly completed DHA 24 (Notice of Birth) (Available from the South African Embassy or Honorary Consul, as it is not downloadable) (All documents to be completed in black ink!) It must be completed without any mistake or amendment and signed by the SA parent on the back of the application form.
  • duly completed DHA-529 in respect of child
  • duly completed DHA-529 in respect of South African parent
  • certified copy of foreign birth certificate in respect of child and English translation thereof
  • certified copy of marriage certificate of parents (if applicable)
  • certified copy of passports and/or ID documents of parents


Take note that no photo is necessary on the DHA 24 if the child is under the age of 15 years. Both parents need to be present when the declaration is completed where the parents are not married (Section D).


This application is free of charge and on receipt thereof it will be referred to the Department of Home Affairs in South Africa for processing. This process can take up to 12 – 16 weeks, after which an application for SA passport may be submitted.


Passport

Notice: The Department of Home Affairs no longer issues Temporary passports as from 01 September 2014.

Applicants must submit their complete d applications in person during the consular opening hours (Mon-Fri: 08:30-12:30) at the Consulate where fingerprints are taken free of charge, copies of original documents certified . Both parents and the child under 18 years must be present when applying for a passport. No appointment is necessary.


Applications will be forwarded to the Department of Home Affairs in Pretoria for process. It takes 3 to 6 months for process. Th e Consulate does not have any influence to speed up the process of passport application.


Emergency Travel Certificate (ETC) is valid only for a single trip and issued only to South Africans who are returning directly to South Africa urgently. It takes 3 working days or longer for process.


Passports are issued valid for 10 years (persons 16 years and older) and 5 years (persons under 16 years). A regular tourist passport contains 32 pages, but frequent travellers can opt to get a maxi tourist passport with 48 pages.


Requirements

  • DHA-73 passport application form
  • DHA-9 form for full set of fingerprints in case of persons 16 years and older.
  • DHA-529 for determination of citizenship status (Parents’ information is compulsory to be completed on form DHA-529: The full names, date of birth, date of marriage, place of marriage, SA ID numbers, nationality, number of immigration permit and date of issue, number of certificate of naturalisation and date of issue, date and place of acquisition of foreign citizenship and means of application, whichever is applicable)
  • Two recent identical colour passport photographs (35mm x 45mm) against white background; mouth closed, not showing teeth
  • Original passport, and /or original SA ID document
  • Original birth certificate in case of persons under 16 years
  • Original marriage certificate or divorce decree , and written request to assume maiden/married/double-barreled surname (only applicable to women who wish to change their surnames) . Passports are issued in accordance with y our names as they appear in the National Population Register (NPR) at the time of your application. Any changes to your names must be applied for , finalised and recorded in the N P R before you submit y our passport application.
  • BI-335E declaration regarding the loss/stolen / damaged passport and a police report. Please note that the Application fee is double.
  • Original naturalization certificate, permanent residence certificate, or exemption certificate , if applicable.
  • Original proof of foreign citizenship, letter of retention or exemption in loss of SA citizenship if applicable.
  • In case of emergency travel certificate, written motivation for the issuing of the emergency travel certificate and a confirmed schedule of travel arrangements.
  • Application fee is HKD 259.00(regular passport), HKD 389.00(maxi passport), HKD 91.00 (Emergency Travel Certificate). Fees are payable only by cash.


REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICATION FOR SOUTH AFRICAN BIRTH/MARRIAGE/DEATH CERTIFICATE

  • Duly completed application form

This application will be forwarded to the Department of Home Affairs in South Africa for processing. The processing time is approximately 4 months. The certificate will be affixed with an Apostille as required by foreign Authorities.

For services regarding notarial services, authentications (except for educational certificates or documentation to be used in other countries than SA), taking oaths, certified copies of SA documents, appointment has to be made in the Consulate.
